MY BACKGROUND
Over the past 4 decades of diving I have designed and built several items for underwater use.It all started out with my first diving watch that was some fiberglass resin, I acquired from a local surfing shop, a tuna fish can, a piece of Plexiglas, wetsuit rubber and some small screws. To my surprise it not only worked, but worked well for several years.
That little Timex project led to several underwater cameras in still, 8mm and Super 8 movie. Then on to a couple of 2 place wet subs and some DPVs. There is really no limit on what you can do when you set your mind to it.
A lot of the bigger items were built while I was aboard ship while in the US Navy.Being a Navy Diver I got all the help I needed from the machine shop and had access to the scrap heaps which were like gold mines. This was better than Junkyard Wars.I could make about any shape out of about any material I wanted and it was all free.
Now that those days are gone I had to put on the old thinking cap and discover another process that was affordable and easy to do from locally available material. After a lot of trial and error I can now offer what I came up with to the public.
What I ended up with is a PVC housing that is made up mostly of scrap, a few screws, nuts and bolts, some Plexiglas, lead, O-rings and Copper water pipe.I have completed housings in just a few days of part time work for around $40.00. They are very durable and have been tested and used well below the safe sport diving limits.Take a little care in your construction and it will look like an expensive commercial unit you bought from a shop.
The red housing pictured below was all scrap and it cost $7.00 out of pocket. This is the housing I like the best and use the most.If you look closely one lens is ½ and the other is 1.
The yellow housing has a 2.5 Casio color TV-770 plugged in behind the Sony Camcorder. It works well but Isnt worth the extra effort. What might interest you is to point a Camcorder out one end and a still camera out the other. Both worlds in one package.
These are fully controlled units and I show you how to make the controls. You can use as few or as many controls as you want but they do cost. About $3.00 each and they work very well.I hope to hear from you soon and feel free to contact me at: gary@nwrecumbentcycles.com
BELOW ARE A FEW SHOTS OF THE HOUSINGS WITH AND WITHOUT LIGHTS
The following shots show just how versatile this design is. A Camcorder, 35mm still camera and a small 110 lens that snaps on a roll of film are just a few things that can be housed. The little one is only 4 and works as good as the others.
The bottom 2 photos show the filter holders that can be added if you choose not to use lights.
Also available is an Underwater Black Light. Watch coral glow on night dives. Has a very subtle lighting effect.
The underwater Laser is a lot of fun. Use it as a pointer, watch fish chase the beam or play Laser Tag on the bottom.ORDERING INFO
